Scope and Contents

This collections documents the career of journalist and author Robert Lindsey. Materials are largely related to research for his various publications and collaborations, including The Falcon and the Snowman (1979), The Flight of the Falcon (1983), A Gathering of Saints (1988), An American Life (1990), Irresistible Impulse (1992), and Brando: Songs My Mother Taught Me (1994). Research materials inlcude news clippings, interview transcripts and recordings, correspondence, notes, photographs, and audio/visual materials. The collection also includes some working manuscripts and published copies of his books, as well as newsclippings of Lindsey's articles for The New York Times from 1968-1989 and The San Jose Mercury-News from 1959-1968.

Biographical

Robert Hughes Lindsey was born on January 4, 1935 in Glendale, California. He is a journalist and author of several true crime books, including The Falcon and the Snowman: A True Story of Friendship and Espionage (1980), The Flight of the Falcon: The True Story of Escape and Manhunt for America’s Most Wanted Spy (1983), A Gathering of Saints: A True Story of Money, Murder and Deceit (1998), and Irresistible Impulse: A True Story of Blood and Money (1992). Lindsey worked as a reporter and editor at the San Jose Mercury News and The New York Times and is the former West Coast Bureau Chief for The New York Times. Marlon Brando and Ronald Reagan used Lindsey’s assistance when writing their autobiographies, respectively Brando: Songs My Mother Taught Me and Ronald Reagan: An American Life.

Deaccession

Notes, interview transcripts, audio and video recordings acquired during the writing of Brando: Songs My Mother Taught Me deaccessioned in 2013 and returned to counsel representing Marlon Brando Living Trust. The agreement between Mr. Lindsey and Mr. Brando stated the work on the book was completed as a "work for hire," with Mr. Brando retaining full and complete ownership and control of all written or taped material made available to Mr. Lindsey as a result of his work.
